Motivated by fresh picked tomatoes, I started with a 12′×12′ kitchen garden which has evolved from a grassless square of clay wrapped in a plastic green fence into a fertile potager-inspired/quasi square foot garden. Watching my kids popping fresh picked peas & cherry tomatoes into their mouths as if they were candy has fueled my desire to garden.
My garden style is as low maintenance as I can get, without sacrificing my choice of plants… I use soaker hoses, electronic timers, mulch and child labour ;) to keep my gardening ‘opportunities’ to a manageable amount.
Last year we began a major renovation to our small backyard which included building a new side deck off the kitchen and installing a patio stone walk from the front to back of the house. Lots of work, lots of fun, and I’m proud to say that after drilling countless screws into deck board after deck board, my husband now trusts me with his tools! This year the plans include finishing a second deck we call the “gazebo holder” in the backyard, adding plants to green things up a bit and eventually adding a garden shed to house all the paraphernalia I’ve accumulated.
Through Folia, I hope to find some new favourite plants to add my garden plans & maybe acquire a few tips to keep them alive and healthy! I’m particularly interested in groups of plants that compliment each other when in bloom and creating a garden that has something of interest all year round.
