    Chives Dormant: Haircut blues

    Overcast 7°C / 45°F

About a month ago, I gave these a haircut, trimming them all to about 3 inches tall, and they haven’t grown a spec since, so I’m assuming they are dormant.

I will be moving them before spring to share a container with my garlic chives.

Lemon Thyme The seasoning of the season

    Overcast 7°C / 45°F 2 thumbs up!

I think I’ll be cooking with a lot of fresh thyme this winter. This hardy, amazing little plant is actually putting out new growth, in spite of the cool temperatures (night time lows close to freezing), bitter wind, lack of light and cold rain.

    It’s amazing.

Purple Sage Dormant: It looks fine

    Overcast 7°C / 45°F

This plant looks fine, but I’m calling it dormant because I’ve decided to stop harvesting from it until spring. I want to make sure it comes back because it’s so pretty.

I’ll be moving it into a container of it’s own before spring. The sage and thyme compete too much in the current container.

Sorrel, red veined Dormant: Flopping over

    Overcast 7°C / 44°F

My red veined sorrel has flopped over. I’m hoping it’s dormant and not dead.

I will be moving it to a container before Spring. Since planting it, I’ve read about how invasive and weedy it can become.

    Rubine Brussels Sprouts Dying: Dead

    Overcast 7°C / 44°F

I don’t know what happened to this plant. I was gone on vacation for a week, and when I returned, it was dead. It’s wilted, floppy and the leaves near the ground are a bit slimy, as if they are rotting.

I poked around in the soil and could find no evidence of a gopher. There are no bugs presently on it. I spent the week about 3 hours south of here, and it was very cold and windy. Could it have been too cold for my sprouts? They were under row cover.

Regardless, I was never going to get sprouts from it anyway, as it was planted too late.

    Asian salad mix Dormant: Holding

    Overcast 7°C / 44°F

These seedlings, protected by their soda bottle cloche, under row cover, appear to be holding on just fine. I hope they give me some early greens before they bolt in the spring.

Radish, cherry belle Harvesting: Tiny gems

    Overcast 7°C / 44°F

I just harvested these tiny gems — small, perfect orbs of radishy goodness. They didn’t even make it in the house this morning. They were breakfast. :)

I have really enjoyed my fall-grown radishes. I’ll have to plant more next year, in a sunnier spot and perhaps earlier.
