Shaneand Ruth's Front Yard Organic Raised Bed garden

Created on Monday, 30 Jun 08

This is our first attempt at vegetable gardening. We chose our front yard because it is a south-facing yard with full sunlight. The back yard, which will eventually become garden space, too, gets a little more shade because of trees and shadows cast by the house. Our soil is of a pretty low quality (mostly clay with only a little topsoil), so we opted to build a modified version of a “lasagna garden” (also known as “sheet mulching”). We built six raised beds for the front yard (12′×4′ each) and “built” the soil from newspaper, straw, mulch, and compost. It’s our first year with it and we’re still learning some things as we go, but it has been a lot of fun, too. If you want to get to know your neighbors, turning your front yard into a vegetable garden is a good way to get folks to walk over and strike up a conversation. We are also growing some plants in containers on our front porch and have started a small area for berry bushes in our back yard.**
