Om's Herb Spiral garden
7/10-7/11 We started construction of the herb spiral in the front yard. My DH positioned it to counter balance the large maple on the other side of the center walk. We started out with about 6 feet diameter, then made it a bit smaller so it was easy to reach the inside. On Saturday we laid the bricks for it (all recycled out of an old bar-b-que patio that was here when we bought the house), and put in the layers.
Cardboard on the bottom to block the lawn growing up through it. Then a bit of sand, to help pack the base bricks and hold down the cardboard. Then a lot of compost, and some more compost, and some more compost. Then a couple of layers of newspaper, and a layer of potting soil. Today (Sunday) I dug out for our cold frames in the back yard against our south fence. I took the soil from there and put it in the herb spiral. It still needs another five or six loads to get it up to the first level. But I will be working on that steadily here for the next couple of days. Then I have lots of things to plant in it already, I just need to plan it out and rough out the spiral which we will probably work on building in another week or two.
