Marko's Front Yard Vegetable garden
I probably got the idea for this garden from hearing the stories about the “Victory Gardens” planted during World War II. Apparently, Americans used whatever space they had available to grow vegetables – even if it was a front yard or empty lot.
This is also the first garden I planted, so everything is an experiment. I want to find out what grows well in this climate and learn how to produce my own vegetables. It’s all done on the cheap too. Nearly everything was grown from seed, and much of the lumber was scrap wood. I did cheat a bit and purchased about two cubic yards of topsoil from a local landscape supply.
This garden is made up of a series of raised beds, wine barrel half’s, and some plastic four gallon planters I salvaged. All the beds are quite shallow, never exceeding six inches.
Despite the cobbled together nature of the garden, the front lawn actually looks much better than it used to.
