Watkinssj's Vegetable garden
My vegetable garden consists of 4 small raised beds, approx. 9’ by 9’ and one large oblong bed approx 18′ × 9′, with a new small rectangle cut out for my transplanted rhubarb. These were all started as no dig garden beds over lawn, which I covered with layers of newspaper watered in, then mulch, chook poo pellets, watered in, then topped with good quality soil. These beds are now in either their third down to first year of production.
The need to attract bees into an urban garden is an ongoing challenge and has necessitated my changing my gardening and pest control practices. I’m now a fan of Jerry Coleby Williams’ (Gardening Australia) and his eco recipes. Worth looking at the website – great practical advice.
I find the physical side of gardening daunting due to severe asthma and arthritis, but the joy of having this garden produce is worth the effort even if I have to pick the days I garden.
We had to surround the garden with fully posted and gated mesh fencing to keep out our german shepherd who loves to dig up the plants and dig holes in any freshly fertilised area, and I had hoped the possums would stay away too – NOT! At least my seedlings don’t go flying into the air anymore from an exuberant dog.
My goal – to have something from the vegetable or fruit garden every day of the year.
