Rainymountain's 2. Porch garden
This was the first garden I made immediately after I came to live here in 2003.
It runs below my entrance porch to a corner of the house, from west to east with the porch on the north side. It is 13’long x 4.5’ at its widest. The main path to the house runs along the west edge; a pebble path divides it from the Shady garden and leads into my main garden.
Trenched about a yard deep, removing pebbles and sand, the soil came from Steve and Celeste at Van der Meers (now no retail plant sales) where I bought all of the original plants at the same time.
There is bark mulch from the house to the drip line on two sides and bark mulch banked the front and path sides of the bed originally. A pebble drainaway from the corner dripline to the path divides off a relatively small corner of the bed containing Tradescantia and Allium moly. The water tap is on the east wall. At the head of the drainaway I keep a rainbucket as a lot of water comes off the roof. In winter there is usually a very heavy snowfall off both roofs as the roof ridge runs west-east, and a massive ice fall forms at the corner.
The bed gets good morning sun but is shaded by the maple from about mid-day on. In Spring it gets sun until mid-afternoon.
