Native plant - yard Planning and Stratifying
This weekend, I placed many of my native plant seeds on wet paper towels in baggies. I have tried other methods of stratifying in the past, damp sand with seeds for example, but I recently read about this technique and have decided to try it. The damp paper towel will continue to provide a moist atmosphere for the seeds and if it starts to dry out, I can spray it and add more water. Also, if the seeds start to sprout on the paper towel, I can move them to trays with soil. I did not seal the ziploc mechanism on the bags, but instead just folded the tops over. I placed all the bags in the refrigerator. Some of the seeds should be scarified and I found this difficult to do with the very small clover seeds. I gently rubbed them on some fine sandpaper but have heard that soaking may cause the seed coat to rupture so the same effect can be obtained by soaking. We’ll see!
We also discussed how we might plant all of these seedlings! I have a vegetable garden planned as well, so there will be lots of gardening this summer. We have talked about setting up cold frames along our garage and providing heat with a heat cable. We have to find some heat cable first though. We’ll make frames with two-by-fours or two-by-twos and plastic. For insulation, we’ll use the 2" styrofoam we have stored.
