Darn Birds!
And here I was thinking it was safe to take the cage off because the cats should leave it alone! The darn birds chomped a few of the brand new beans! I wasn’t planning on keeping the cage on throughout the whole season. I was hoping to use it on a new garden. Guess I’ll be needing another cage AND another box.

Oh dear :-(
Are the birds in Hawaii scarecrow acclimatised? Old CDs on thread dangling amongst plants can be quite effective.

The culprits are cardinals. I don’t think the birds are afraid of scarecrows. The mynah birds chase our cat! It’s hilarious! I’ll try the CDs—thanks for the tip!

Poor cat! I hope the CDs work, though I am no expert on such wonderful exotic birds, they might decide they like them and come and look :-/. I’m pretty good at scaring off sparrows, blackbirds and pretty well everything else over here in the UK, and that’s after I try and encourage them in my garden with bird food and all that stuff…
(and no, the bird food is not my plants ;-p)
I am honoured to give you your first comment, may there be many more :-)

If they are going after tender young just sprouted beans, it might be safe to leave the cage off in another week or two.

Thanks Ves! I’m noticing that they are going after plants outside the cage so I’m thinking I still need the cage to protect the lettuce, carrots and basil planted in the same garden.
