Tragedy!
A huge storm hit last night with 80 mph winds. knocked down every last one of my plants (even the 80+ pound upside down mater planter). A LOT of fruit that was not ripe yet was ripped off. There are probably about 50 green tomatoes lying all over the ground. One of my Health Kick Hybrids cracked at the stem and is unsalvageable, so that plant is gone.
I’m so upset!
I guess no matter how green of a thumb you have, mother nature can still be mean little bi**h.

Wow some storm, sad that so much damage was done to your garden. Apart from fried green tomatoes, I think that I would gather up all the undamaged green tomatoes and put them in a dark place between layers of newspaper – they may ripen yet. We always had a lot of unripe tomatoes when the first hard frosts hit in Saskatchewan and this is what I did with them. They ripened slowly and we probably ate them until Christmas – not as good a sun warmed tomato but pretty tasty.
Good luck

Fellow Chicagoan here! Yeah, that was a bad one. What is it about August storms? The one in June that knocked over the tree totally left the plants alone. Unlike you, my edibles are all fine, but it flattened all the leggy flowers and the herbs. Seconding salvaging those tomatoes. As long as they have a shiny tomato-y looking skin you should be able to ripen them inside. Like rm, I always do this with the last few before the frost.

oh no your flowers and herbs! at least the edibles are ok. After I get home from work today I am going to see what is salvagable and what isn’t. I will probably end up taking and posting pictures later this evening also.

Also, the longer you leave the Health Kick Hybrids on the stalk, the better they will be as they ripen. At least, that’s the theory…my Mom always brought in the whole plant after those end of season frosts, and hung them upside down in the basement.

Summer storms can be devastating – I’ve had similar damage done to my garden in the past. You may find a lot more is salvageable than you think at first glance. Plants can be remarkably resilient in my experience. Good look with your rescue mission.
