rainymountain full moon

Friday, 15 Aug 08 (posted about 4 months ago) Sunny 32°C / 90°F

A full moon rising, golden in a golden aura. To the South it is dark, to the North the twilight lingers in a transluscent turquoise band. The nights get longer but the day was hot, hotter than yesterday.

Yesterday evening I ran the soaker system for 3 hours, tonight for 2. Tomorrow is forecast to be hotter yet and then showers, rain and temperatures down to seasonal normal in the low 20Cs. And then back up again, maybe. If it is cloudy and showery on Sunday, I may do some of the transplanting I have in mind, then things can settle in during the following wet cool days.

This morning I watered all the containers and remembered to do a bloom list-
Kitchen – Heuchera ‘Purple Palace’ which is also blooming in the House bed.
Porch – R. Winnipeg Parks, Lilium orientale ‘Mr Rudd’ aka the Stinky Lily, Hemerocallis ‘Ruby Stella’ – except for the dark red hemerocallises, the rest have their last flowers, Stokesia ‘Blue Danube’
Bow window – Coreopsis rosea ‘American Dream’, R Jens Munk
House – Verbascum phoeniceum 2nd flush, Rosa Sunrise, Isotoma fluviatilis aka Blue Star Creeper (has been going all summer), Bronze Fennel. In pot – pansies, Acidanthera bicolor murieliae
E.Pot black violas and red begonia
East – R.Henry Kelsey, Hollyhocks/Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’
East 2 – PG Hydrangea is about to burst into spectacular bloom, loaded; Tradescantia sharp pink/purple, Monada, Potentilla, R. Emily Carr, Hemerocallis all 3 reds, Scabiosa caucasica, Dianthus
East 2 box – R. Alta
Centre box – Canna
Centre – Hemerocallis ‘Autumn Red’ or ‘Bonanza’, Rudbeckia hirta ‘Cherokee Sunset’, Coreopsis ‘Zagreb’ and ‘Golden Showers’, Gaillardia ‘Burgundy’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Linaria alpina, thymne, Hemerocallis ‘Big Smile’, and a big yellow flower that I haven’t identified, also what I think is an Artimesia.
Road – Hydrangea Brussels Lace which I think is going over as it is rather droopy, Bronze Fennel, Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’, the vigorous Anemone tomentosa ‘Robustissima’ which is at least 6’ double its catalogue size; Lilium ‘Black Beauty’, Liatris spicata, Catananche caerulea, unidentified lily, Oriental lily ‘Expression’ – these were freebies from Botanus a Vancouver mail-order firm I can recommend, run by three women. This is their 4th year and these lilies just get better.
Drive- Echinops, Salvia venticulata ‘Purple Rain’ 2nd flush, Achellia ‘Moonshine" losing good colour, Gentiana dahurica, Coreopsis ’Moonshine’, Helenium, Chrysanthemum ‘Moren Cameo White’, Gaillardia ‘Golden Goblin’, last of the Chinese larkspur.
Drivehead – Hemerocallis in bud so can’t identify + ‘Rajah’, Cimifuga s. ‘Hillside Black Beauty’.

That’s 59 different varieties, no wonder I balk at doing a June or July count!

Photos: Lilium Black Beauty, Lilium Expressions x 2, Japanese anemone, liatris with copulating butterflies.

On the plants behalf, I thank you. The individual plants are so gorgeous and interesting, although you don’t get to see the blighted, chewed and just plain mediocre nor is the overall look of the garden always satisfactory. However I really like to look at individual plants rather than masses of the same sort.
