Week 3 gardeing summary - strawberries and weeds
Wow, time goes slowly when you’re tracking your garden by week.
The garden is doing pretty well. We had a week of very sunny and warm weather and the strawberries and lettuce did so well that we could harvest them. I need to plant more strawberries next year!
Other than that, all the other plants are growing okay. The carrots are growing very slowly. Still first leaves. The spinach and soy beans are now growing their second set of leaves. I’m thinking another week and I can start taking some of the basil, even though they’re still only a few inches tall. I thought I planted too many (10 total). But with the late season, I can’t harvest too many from one plant yet so 10 is actually okay.
I think it’s time I pull out the pumpkin. It so wants to die but is somehow hanging on, getting more and more mildewy looking every day.
We’re slowly clearing our plot itself. I think it may be time to get out the tiller though Weedless Gardening recommends against it. The blackberries are just poking out all over the place and I’m really too old to be digging holes in the ground. I’m sore all over today from cutting back the gianormous blackberry bush we have. Still not done yet. We found quite a few interesting things left over from previous owner, including one flip-flop, a toy airplane, plastic bags, weird particle board thingie.
The only other thing is the stupid weeds. Every day I pull out more grass or blackberry shoots from the SFG. It drives me nuts. They come through the thick mulch and I can’t get to the bottom of it, just nipping the buds only. I want to build another 4×4 square and after the season is over, move this soil over to that new square and in the process get rid of all the weeds. We’ll put a black cloth down (another thing the book recommends against but I don’t want weeds!). Except I don’t know how I can do that w/ the strawberry plants we have.
