Sprouting: Sprouting, after I thought I had failed
There has been absolutely no sign of life from any of the tomato seeds I sowed in August. I’m not entirely surprised that my hot-water bottle trick didn’t work, since we wound up having to re-arrange the backyard for the arborists to access the trees and my commitment to actually refilling the hot-water bottles declined rapidly once they were harder to get to.
But, just when I was about to give up completely, up pops little Mortgage Lifter! Only one sprout so far out of all the seeds I sowed, but still, I’m feeling optimistic.

I’m always surprised by how long tomato and pepper seeds stick around in the soil. My tomato was a volunteer; who knows how long it was waiting around to pop up.
