How to I get rid of fungus gnats?
I have an evil little infestation of fungus gnats in my veggies and herbs. How on earth do I get rid of them safely?

When we get bad bug problems in our greenhouse, we use a combination of 1/2-1 cup cooking oil, 1 teaspoon dish liquid, and 1 gallon of water. we spray all sides of the plant. It really seems to do the trick with problems like aphids. I also used this to save my Brugmansia that the spider mites had all but killed. Hopefully it will help with your evil gnats!

1) Fungus gnats need moist soil to lay their eggs in and in which the larvae mature. the actual flies themselves have a short lifespan. So the best place to get them is in the soil. If you can afford to let the soil dry out between waterings rather than continually keeping the soil moist this will reduce the amounts of fungus gnats 10 fold. The larvae don’t survive in dry soil.
2) Use the “yellow sticky” strips you find at most garden centers
3) I keep a Butterwort, Ping (Pinguicula) among my houseplants, these carnivores work just as well as the “yellow sticky” pads and look better ;-)

Thanks! These are both great suggestions, I will keep them in mind. Seeing as my garden is a patio garden and made up entirely of containers, I have a hard time letting anything just sit outside and die. I feel like I have to bring them in the house and save them (My boyfriend calls them my kids). unfortunately, when you bring in plants from the outside, you will likely bring in bugs. Both of us are anti-chemicals in the plants because most of what we grow is edible. I will definitely try out these suggestions!
