Getting darker
I learned from the BBC gardening site that these guys get darker after cold weather, so I’m going to wait a little bit longer.
An Italian seed site also said they need cold weather to turn red. It said to expect to harvest October to mid-December.
Don’t know if they’re going to look like the picture on the seed package, or whether I need to cut them off, overwinter the roots and let them grow back in spring for that red-and-white look. Any thoughts on this?

That’s raddicchio!?! I never would have guessed. I think it’s a beautiful looking plant … I’d grow it just for an ornamental!
I can’t help with any advice … just more questions :) Does it form a head? Have you tasted it yet?

I know, pretty unexpected! I used a few leaves throughout the summer in salad mixes, they’re a bit tougher and more bitter than my other salad leaves.
By the way, this is what the seed package image looks like: http://myfolia.com/stash/4067
I’m going to leave them and see if I can harvest a head of radicchio this winter. The instructions on the seed package say you can overwinter the roots, after which you’ll get some new growth next spring.
The leaves are ‘curling up’ a little, it does seem to be forming a loose head.

Wow, I can’t wait to see if yours turns into what’s pictured. The photo almost looks like a red and white romaine … it’s beautiful! Keep us update with pictures if/as it changes.
