matangie Harvesting: Didn't bulb. Grr.....

Tuesday, 11 Nov 08 (posted about 1 months ago) Cloudy 4°C / 39°F Unhappy

I had harvested half of the onions earlier in the fall when they started dying back but many of them were still going so I let them keep going. I finally pulled them today, mostly because I want to get the beds cleaned and tucked in for winter already. Many (well most) of the remaining onions don’t seem to have bulbs. They have the shape of enormous green onions. I’ve got them drying out on a window screen but I don’t think they’ll be able to store well since they didn’t bulb. My best guess is that this happened because they were planted a bit late. At least that’s the only explanation I can come up with. (If anyone reads this, can you let me know on this one. Thanks.) Since it seems that I will have a lot of onions that need to be used quickly, I’m planning to make lots and lots and lots of onion-based soups and freeze them in lunch-sized amounts.

Did you get the right kind of onion for your latitude? I’ve read that bulbs require a certain amount of daylight to bulb, and the ones that grow best in the north require the long days of the northern summers to bulb, whereas the ones that grow well in the south will bulb with shorter days. I’ve seen maps of the US with a line across the middle that says which sort of onion you need to plant. I think (although this is for memory, since I’m lazy and am not re-looking it up) you’re relatively close to the line, so if you got long day onions, you might be better off with the shorter day southern varieties, even if you’re a smidge above the line. But this is just a guess, based on research I’ve done with the thought of eventually growing onions, which I’ve not done yet.
