I noticed this growing in my chives pot the other day. I don’t really have the heart to yank it out though. I know it’s a maple but I’m not sure what kind. If it’s from the tree in the backyard it seems to be most similar to a Sugar Maple. At first I was thinking it was a Red Maple but the tree turns yellow and light orange in the Fall, not red.
So I think I’m going to keep this little guy and transplant it soon to it’s own little pot. We plan on buying a house within the next 2 years so depending how fast maples grow (I’ll be doing some research on this first) I could just have it in a pot on our balcony and bring it with us when we move!

The leaves on the seedling look like our silver maple seedlings. If that’s the case, you might want to be careful with it. Silver maples have aggressive roots, (like willows to an extent), and weak limbs, so you don’t want to plant them where the roots can get into the pipes or foundation, or where the branches will fall on anything important. Also, since the roots are so thirsty, they suck up water quickly in the summer, making it difficult to grow things underneath them. (can you tell what kind of maples we had in our yard?)
Of course, the seedling leaves may not look like the adult leaves, so it’s probably more accurate to consider the adult tree. This page: http://www.waterfordva-wca.org/nature-garden/trees-maples.htm looked like it had a good comparison. Or post some pictures of the tree and I’ll look at those too.
