Alfred's pear tree
We planted this pear tree when my parents brought this house 30 years ago. Every year it produces such wonderful pears. Friends will come and help themself when the pear were ready to eat. I used some of them to make jams, all of my friends love them.

Can you please tell me how you know when your pears are ready to eat?

The pears usually ready to eat by the end of September but we pick them before they are ripe otherwise the animals and birds will get them first.

We have a couple of pear trees in our garden, Conference and Concorde, and we have very heavy crops of pears each year – so much so that, in the past, we have lost whole branches which broke under the weight of fruit! We also have to pick our pears before the birds get to them so they are usually collected before they are fully ripe. Usually, if you just lift each pear gently and the stalk breaks off easily, it’s ripe, otherwise it won’t break and you know to leave it a little longer. Of course, that’s not possible if you have hundreds of fruit and the tree is fifteen feet tall. A sweet juicy pear at the peak of ripeness is heaven :-)
