    Jostaberry Purchased

Jostaberry, pronournced ‘Yosta-berry’, is a cross between blackcurrant and gooseberry.

FEATURES Easy to grow bushes that are more vigorous than the parents and combine their best charactersitics. They are resistant to American Gooseberry Mildew, free of spines and need little pruning. Bushes grow to around 1.5 – 2 m tall and need about 2 m between them. Large juicy fruit are ripe December – january and intermediate in size between blackcurrant and gooseberry.

CONDITIONS Highly frost tolerant and best in areas where winters are cold. Plant into rich, free draining coil in a site protected fom strong winds. Will tolerate full sun.

FOR BEST RESULTS Mulch soil well including well rotted compost. Older branches carry the fruiting laterals so once established only excess young shoots need removing from the centre of the bush. Older branches can be trimmed back if needed. Feed with a general fertiliser of blood and bone in spring each eary. Water well over hottest months.

    PLANTING IDEAS AND USES:

    • eat fresh or add to fruit salad
    • makes a very good gam and can be used in desserts
    • store frozen for use out of season
    • high in vitamin C
