This is Dot. She’s a rescue plant, a sad & sorry florist’s specimen found by my girlfriend at the shopping centre and presented to me with big sad “we have to SAVE HER!” eyes. Since my girlfriend already has a gorgeous big hydrangea in her yard, Dot became mine.

Like all mistreated florist’s specimens, Dot had been raised to give basically one good flower display then perish (or fade into ill-cared-for obscurity). She was past her prime & wrapped in purple plastic when we got her, and she got her name from the speckles on her almost-completely-bare stems. We took her home, re-potted her into good potting mix & cut her back hard to the lowest leaf-buds. She’s rewarded us with rapid, full foliage growth, and she’s doubled in size in about three weeks- I half-expect her to bloom again this season, but I’m happy enough to wait ’til next year.

Oh, rescue plants- sometimes they break your heart, and sometimes they reward beyond expectation.

It looks like Hydrangea macrophylla, but it’ll be easier to tell when it flowers.
