Happibun Happibun's Mallow kind of thing
Malva moschata

I really love this plant. I’m not sure what it is, it just was given to me as a seedling by one of my gardening neighbours, Pat, when I moved in. It is at least a biannual, if not perennial, though it happily self seeds around the place. It grows to a couple of feet high, has feathery leaves and delicate cup shaped flowers with ?5 white petals and pink stamen. The petals are like those of a buttercup in shape but much bigger, perhaps 2 inches across if flattened out. It flowers in late summer / early autumn.

Each year I shake the seed heads around the place to be sure that I get some more next year.

Update: I have narrowed this down to some member of the Mallow / hollyhock family, but am still trying to get a positive Identification. Pat says it was called ‘Silver Dollar’ or something like that, but she’s not sure.

Updated again: Hurrah! Verthandei has come up with the goods. She has tracked it down to being a musk mallow, the distinctive white variety. You can find out everything you need to know about it here – Malva moschata f. alba

Yep I’d call this a mallow type of thing as well but have no real idea why. We had one – purple-pink flowers it got very woody and now has gone by the wayside in the relentless pursuit of pond – ness. This is a lovely colour though. I think these flourish quite well near water so would fancy planting by the pond if and when.

Well, I will be collecting the seeds this year, so I’ll let you know, you are welcome to some if you want them :-)

This is quite a small plant for a mallow, it gets to about a metre tall, that’s all. I’m putting a post up in a minute about the flower and leaves in the hope someone will be able to tell me which kind of mallow thing it is… :-)

It’s probably Lavatera, but the leaves might be wrong..

I have pink Mallows. The seeds were given to me by my sister. I can’t believe how big it has gotten. It finished blooming so I cut it right down to the ground and now I’m getting some new foliage. It seems to me that if you sprinke seeds they will be uncontrolable.

Those pink mallows grow up to 2 meters or so don’t they. They are from a different branch of the mallow family. My mum had one in her garden, and it took over about half of it. Even when you hack them back they carry on going bonkers. Yes, I would have no room for one of those, but these musk mallows are ideal if you are tight for space.
