I use Dahlias in my containers just about every year. I love them, and there are so many colors and styles they can fit in just about anywhere. My only wish would be for them to be hardy to my zone. I have no specific identification or name for any of these Dahlias. These are the four that I used...This entry is about Sne Irish's Dahlia - mixed in the Outside Container garden.

late november and still putting out buds!
It is hard to beleive, but as of November 22 it still is putting out buds. I think it may be best to lop off the buds and force the tubers to develop. Be sure to do that next week. I sprinkled some of the camellia fertilizer all over today. This entry is about Emily Gogol's Dahlia - Skipley Spot in the Connecticut Friendship Garden garden.

Dying Down: Still flowering and some new growth, but weak
Has a few new buds, just clipped some flowers, and has some new growth. Red Cactus likewise. SF Dahlia society says to fertilize one more time. I will write that in to my task list. December is time to lop it off, check the website for instructions. This entry is about Emily Gogol's Dahlia - Skipley Spot in the Connecticut Friendship Garden garden.

Dormant: Taken In For The Year
I took in my dahlia for the year, pulled the 3 new tubers off the main one, and hopefully, they will survive well this winter and be ready to go out again after the last frost. This time, I will remember to support the plants so they will actually grow up nicely. This entry is about La Ruse's Dahlia Duet in the Rose garden.

This became heavily afflicted with powdery mildew while I was away, and it was too severe to try to spray organically. I noticed that the mildew seemed to be spreading to some nearby roses, so I cut it down to some stalks. This entry is about Sf Kelly's Red Dahlias in the urban retreat garden.

This plant is still flowering cheerfully, but it has so much white powdery mildew on it that it looks like I dusted it in flour. Unfortunately, the outbreak happened while I was away, so I couldn’t get it controlled. I can’t decide whether to cut it back drastically or just let it kee...This entry is about Sf Kelly's Dahlia in the urban retreat garden.
