tbuser Is this tomato blight?

Tuesday, 15 Jul 08 (posted about 1 months ago)

? This question is currently listed as unanswered. If you think you may be able to help with this question, leave Tbuser a possible answer below.

My tomatoes are big and healthy looking. (see the three next to tires in the second picture) The leaves are fine and there are lots of flowers and little green tomatoes growing. However, several of them have these nasty looking brown spots on the bottoms. My wife cut this one open and said there were a few tiny nat sized bugs crawling on it.

I searched the internet and it sort of looks like some of the pictures of tomato blight. :(

Update: I did some more searching and I’m thinking its “blossom end rot”? I think I might be watering them too much…

Hunh.. I thought I posted something here already.

It could be blossom end rot. That’s caused by deficiencies in the soil…especially calcium, and can be aggravated by drought, so if it is that, it’s not from overwatering. Next year, put eggshells in the hole when you plant the tomatoes.

I disagree. As far as soil moiture BER is caused by both under and overwatering! Even soil moisture is the key. There can be other factors in any nutrient deficiency/toxicity for example excessive amount of one or another macro or micro nutrients. Or your soil could be lacking Ca period which only a soil test can verify, but moist soils have adequate levels.

i concur w/ vera Easter Wa.

I have a hunch it’s more due to irregular watering and root stress.

Never knew that about overwatering…probably because I’ve never done that. I always forget to water instead.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s blossom end rot. I’ve started going out every night and giving them a light watering to try and keep it consistent. Virtually all of the tomatoes have the spots on the bottoms, however some of the newer ones seem ok so far. So it could be over or under watering? Man I can’t win. :)

I’ve also read that planting too early and/or having cold weather when they’re young can cause it? That’s a possibility since I remember we did have an unexpected cold spell not long after I planted them out.
