Why won't my iris bloom?
? This question is currently listed as unanswered. If you think you may be able to help with this question, leave Kesky a possible answer below.
I got some hybrid iris tubers from a friend about 5 years ago. They continue to multiply each year, but of about 40 plants only 5 ever bloom (the same five each year.) They get afternoon sun. Should I fertilize? and with what kind of fertilizer? Or what else could be wrong with them? I live in zone 3-4 in Minnesota.

Here a site that may have the answer to your question.
The first thing I always check is the plant depth. A lot of people plant them too deeply. With the same ones blooming every year, and everything else apparently equal, check the plant depth out.

I would guess the culprit is not enough sun. Are the blooms that you do get full sized? If not, its even more likely too little sun is the problem.
The depth issue is also valid. If you dig them up, check that they are not overcrowded, and that they don’t have any infections. (i.e. throw away any mushy corms)

Yikes! I think I have alot of transplanting to do! They are probably overcrowded AND too deep! Thanks for the advice. They are gorgeous colors and I would love to see them blooming! Kesky

I’ll bet you it’s the depth, too. I had these gorgeous irises that didn’t bloom for three years (but lots of great foliage!) until a friend told me they have to be VERY close to the surface. I realized that I had been adding topsoil every year and they had gotten gradually deeper every time! I did what she suggested and this year had the most gorgeous irises ever! Good luck to you.
