soleil What tree to plant for shade?

I had to remove a juniper from my backyard because it was turning brown and shedding powder all over the place. When the worker came to cut the tree, he claimed that that was something digging at the root, causing the damage.

Without the tree, my backyard gets a bit too much sun. I’d like to put in a replacement. Something that grows quickly. Bonus points if it is also edible :-)

Similar problem here, with a different lost tree. We’re considering a Filbert (Corylus maxima, I believe). We put one in our parkway 5 years ago and it has doubled in size in the time. Grows a beautiful lozenge-shaped crown, and has nice dense leaves for good shade. Here’s the tree. This was planted at 10 feet tall; it is now two stories. I’m Zone 5.

Filbert looks interesting. I’ll check and see if they like zone 10.

it’s hard to get a faster growing shade tree than an empress tree. useful wood, pretty flowers, coppices well, easy to grow. those giant leaves make a ridiculous mess, though.

you might think about bamboo. clumping varieties are easily contained, grow tall quickly, and there are quite a few with edible shoots.

lots of fruit trees could fit the bill. zone 10 should be great for growing fruit. check out the Trade Winds Fruit website for some ideas.
