    Hotpot greens

    Hotpot greens
As my summer plantings produce less and less, I start to think about what to plant for the fall. All books indicate that it is the season of salad greens, but we don’t eat salad at home. Just as I was about to give up the idea of growing greens, I realized that fall is hotpot season, and I ...

What tree to plant for shade?

Posted about 21 days ago | 4 responses

I had to remove a juniper from my backyard because it was turning brown and shedding powder all over the place. When the worker came to cut the tree, he claimed that that was something digging at the root, causing the damage. Without the tree, my backyard gets a bit too much sun. I’d like t...

    Tomatoes both big and small!

    Tomatoes both big and small!
I grew tiny Gardeners Delight and Balconi Yellow, mid size Alicante (a gift from friends) and the large tomato ‘Big Beef’. The damp humid summer of 2008 meant that blight was a real problem (as well as the plants being drastically overwatered by both hubby and uncle when I was away fr...

    Clearing the ivy

    Clearing the ivy
As I am getting more into gardening, I am running out of space in the backyard. I surveyed the whole place, and realized that the best spot – the south facing strip – was covered with ivy. Today I finally got my act together and pulled them out. I removed most of the leaves, but there...

    Super harvest
Everything I planted at the beginning of the season is on the table: bell peppers, carrots, green beans, zucchinis, plus all three kinds of tomatoes (cherry, sweet 100 and early girl). What a bounty!

    Harvest day

    Harvest day
Lots of goodies from the garden today: a large bowl of sweet 100 tomatoes, half a large bowl of cherry tomatoes (the other half was from last week), one zucchini (the other two from yesterday), and three carrots. Pulling those carrots was especially exciting. I have been dying to see how they loo...

    First tomatoes of the Season
Nice day here so I went out to the front yard garden and finally decided to pick a few tomatoes. Made a BLT for lunch and it was delicious! Had a few slices of tomatoes on the side, so good. Here are a couple pictures including a zucchini blossom and sunflower.

Went out into the vegetable garden today and picked the first green beans of the year. Just a little over one pound. Had a couple right off the plant, they were so good!
