    Today's harvest

    Today's harvest
It rained all day, which meant harvesting with impunity. No wasps, although my back is still wet despite my having worn a raincoat and hat. The big orange spider has moved on. So I went ahead and harvested the kale, which she was blocking access to. Today’s haul: one eggplant, ~20 lon...

    Tonight's Harvest

    Tonight's Harvest
Tonight I went out with a flashlight and did more harvesting. I tried to go out in the late afternoon, but I kept a safe distance and saw that there were yellow jackets. Nighttime harvesting has an interesting set of challenges. First of all, I need one of those spelunking caps. I imagine it&...

    Progress report

    Progress report
In 2 1/2 weeks we’ve had bright sunshine and heat every day, plus I managed to remember to water. We’ve got 3 days coming of cool and rain (I hope) but then it’s supposed to get warm again. If I’d thought of doing this 2-3 weeks earlier, I’d be doing great. As it i...

Now I know why they call it "Labor Day"

Now I know why they call it "Labor Day"
Feeling a lot better about the look of the New Patio. The sun is just brutal there, but our neighbor says he has a garden umbrella; we just need a small umbrella-holder table to stabilize it, so that will help (and will fulfill Bill’s fondest wish, to have a table with an umbrella, for whi...

    Midnight Gardening

    Midnight Gardening
Ok, it was 11:30 gardening, really. We waited to garden last night after all danger of yellow jacket had passed. And after the coffee shop at Borders that stayed open until 11 closed for the last time. That’s a tragedy. Not only is a perfectly good bookstore closing, but no other coffee...

    Expanded Winter Greens Garden

    Expanded Winter Greens Garden
Yesterday we decided to rearrange our front porch so we’d have space for more greens by the south window. This involved moving a day-bed to the other side of the porch, which was work, but we managed to turn it without taking it apart, which was a relief. We took the coffee table from the...

    One that got away!
Well, I don’‘t know how the Japanese beetles seemed to miss this beauty, but they left it alone…for the moment. I hate taking photos of them now though because the leaves behind them look so horrific. There IS still some color around the garden and some nice blooms still opening...
