The squash vine that ate Massachusetts

    Posted about 12 days ago | Overcast 25°C / 77°F | 3 thumbs up!

The squash vine that ate Massachusetts
Perhaps it is best that I moved the dahlias and the peas were eaten by rabbits. I apparently seriously misjudged the amount of space I needed for winter squash. I shouldn’t plant shop while hungry. We were on vacation for a week that rained here, and apparently the squash has taken ov...

    Beans out, lettuce in!

Posted about 14 days ago |

The bush beans were done, so we pulled them all up yesterday. Today we’re going to try making some pickled dilly beans. I let the little ones have at the former bean patch and after a top dressing of compost, plant lettuce, mesculin (which really just means mizuna) and radishes. Not sure w...

    Cross Pollination in Heirloom Tomatoes?

    Posted about 14 days ago | Sunny | 1 comment | 5 thumbs up!

    Cross Pollination in Heirloom Tomatoes?
Sources seem agreed that the majority of tomatoes naturally cross pollinate at a rate of 2%-5%, but can, under certain conditions be up to 50% (tropical climate, double flowers & potato leafed varieties) Most pollination occurs inside the flower before it even opens… and here I’ve be...

    English Ivy Pruning
With the onset of spring upon us, brings a new flush of growth on my English Ivy which is overhanging my rock wall that requires a cleanup..Just remember to use sharp secateurs, and when you prune it back just try and hide the cuts to keep it looking neat and tidy..

    The Harvest

    Posted about 18 days ago | Sunny 22°C / 72°F | 2 thumbs up!

    The Harvest
Things are popping out there. The cherry tomatoes are several cups a day at this point. Unfortunately, the carrots didn’t do so well. One row got fallen on by one of the kiddoes, and it just never recovered. The others just didn’t take off. I think perhaps they were over planted after...

    Storm Damage

    Posted about 18 days ago | Storms 22°C / 71°F

    Storm Damage
We didn’t have a real bad storm, but we did get some very heavy, very fast rain. It beat down this garden that is the most exposed. Also, since it gets so much sun, the plants seem to be rather tall. Right now the garden looks bare, because the four o’clocks are only in their first ye...

Seed Saving - Step One: Isolating Seeds

    Posted about 22 days ago | Sunny | 9 comments | 8 thumbs up!

Seed Saving - Step One: Isolating Seeds
I’ve been doing a bit of research on seed saving techniques and thought I would journal them so I don’t forget what to do next year! So far I’ve isolate seeds from Black Cherry, Black Krim, Pink Ping Pong and just today Persimmon. I cut circles from my wedding veil on Sunday, which ironically...

    new shape

    Posted about 25 days ago | Sunny 21°C / 70°F

Changed the stones. Tightened into a square and filled in with growing mix to make a raised bed. Added 2 solar lights at opposite corners and buried 4 potted hostas, 1 on each side to test how I like them there.

This entry is about Crimsonsketch's Backyard - Around the tree garden.
